great california road trip #6

After a long day driving down cloudy route 395 the sun began setting low enough to shine under the clouds. Lauren and I saw a beautiful streak of light painted horizontally across the mountains to our East. As we were driving through Bishop, California, I excitedly turned down a side street and sped towards the mountains so we could photograph the light. In a flash I saw a police officer, the speed limit, and my speedometer. I pulled myself over before the officer even had a chance to U-turn and flip on his lights. Why were we speeding? You see officer, there is

this beautiful light over on the mountains and we are just a couple of nerdy photographers in an unregistered pickup truck with North Carolina a license plate. “Seeing that light everyday is why we live here,” is roughly what he told us. He gave us a warning and told us to slow down, but kept us there long enough for the light to pass. I felt bad for speeding through this man’s community, but we as we drove south to Lone Pine we were rewarded with a beautiful and fiery-red sunset.
