great california road trip #3

We began one of our longer days of driving when we left Lake Tahoe. We drove south down Highway 395, which runs along the eastern side of the Sierras in the valley and high desert. The highway is surrounded by constantly changing landscapes and high mountains. You could spend weeks on this route and not see everything. It was a gray day driving down and we stopped to see Mono Lake. The smell was horrible as we walked through the white mud to get closer to the lake. I almost covered myself in it after slipping as I hopped between rocks to get a few feet into the waters edge. Luckily, I did not fall. There were also thousands of tiny alkali flies on the ground, however, there were not as many as can be seen in this video, thankfully.

Mono Lake off of Highway 395 has high levels of salt. The formations in the water are tufa rocks, basically a common limestone.
